If you buy a bed set it will usually come with a fitted sheet and a flat sheet along with the rest of the other stuff in the package. The former will be used to cover the mattress and the latter will go on top of it and is tucked at the corners and at the foot. The flat sheet or top sheet usually goes between the comforter and the fitted sheet.

Tucking Yourself in at Night

When you go off to bed at night you’ll turn the covers back. We all generally fold the blankets and the comforter. The next thing we ought to do is to sleep under the flat sheet and the rest of the covers as well. You will literally go between the sheets, as the saying goes. All the other stuff goes over these two sheets. You may ask why in the world anyone would need another sheet on top of the fitted sheet.

Why Add a That Second Sheet

If you’re wondering why you have to add another sheet to a fitted sheet even though you already have several layers of other covers on top, here’s the reason why. Your bed set comes with both the flat and fitted sheets. The fitted sheet is supposed to be covered by the top sheet, serving as a protective layer against moisture.

With this sheet on you don’t have to remove the fitted sheets every so often. All you ever need to do is to remove and wash the protective sheet covering it. Another reason for adding this sheet is to add a bit of style to your bed. You can let it hang around the sides to add detail to the bed cover’s design.

How to Fold the Sheet

Folding these sheets won’t really be much of a challenge. With a little practice you can have it nicely folded keeping your bed pretty neat. The first step is to lay the sheet flat on your bed. Fold the sheet where the top corners match the bottom corners. Next, fold the sheet in half. If the sheet now fits your bed then you’re done. In case the sheet is just too big, depending on the size of the bed, keep folding the sheet in half until it exactly fits the bed.

Putting the Sheet on Your Bed

Putting the sheet on the bed is just as easy as folding it for storage or when you’re getting ready to fix your bed. To put the top sheet on your bed, lay it flat on top of the fitted sheet. You should have put on the fitted sheet before laying the flat sheet on top of it.

Try to make the entire length of the top sheet even on both sides of the bed. If you like, you can make a fold or two on the side where the headboard is located. After that you can now tuck in the sides of the top sheet. You can now lay the comforter and the other blankets you want to use.

Get the Right Sizes

In order to avoid going through the hassle of working on a sheet that is too big for your bed you should be familiar with the different sizes and dimensions of top/flat sheets. Twin sized sheets are 66 x 96 inches while X-long twins are 66 x 102 inches.

Full size sheets on the other hand will be 81 x 96 inches. Queen sizes are 90 x 102 inches while the King size sheet will be 108 x 102 inches. The idea is to get the dimensions of your bed and pick the right size of sheet to use on it.

Other Uses

In case you don’t really want to use a flat sheet then there are several things you can use it for. You can use to make a lampshade, curtain, and a table cloth among others. All it takes is a little creativity in order to put this sheet to good use.
