When shopping for mattress sheets, the design is almost always the last priority. The quality of the sheet, its softness and durability, is the first consideration for most shoppers.
The softness is dependent on several factors including the materials used on the sheets and the number of thread count per weave. If you are looking for a wrinkle-free top sheet, then a blend of cotton and polyester materials is what you want.
On the other hand, if you are after really soft top sheets, you will want to look at 100% cotton flat sheets. Cotton and polyester blend sheets are not as soft as one hundred percent cotton sheets.
What Cotton Sheets Do You Want?
Deciding on 100% cotton flat sheets is not the last of your considerations. There are several types of cotton sheets available these days hence; you may need to do a bit more research on what type of cotton material you may want to go with.
Among the most popular cotton sheets are those labeled as Egyptian cotton sheets. Egyptian cotton is long staple cotton that is mostly found in Egypt. This type of cotton actually comes with a high price tag because its quality is superior to that of regular cotton.
Other types of cotton used in sheets are the Pima cotton, which is actually derived from Egyptian cotton, and SuPima cotton. Both types are grown in the United States.
When buying any of these cotton sheets, make sure to check the label and see if it says one hundred percent. In some instances, labels will merely say Egyptian cotton or Pima cotton and more often than not, this would mean that there is only a small percentage of the indicated cotton used in the sheet.
So unless the label says one hundred percent, do not assume that it really is 100%.
Thread Count and Thread Ply
After you have decided on the specific type of cotton that you want for your flat sheets, your next important consideration is the thread count. Thread count determines the number of threads used in every 1-inch square of your sheet.
Thread ply on the other hand is the number of fibers twisted together to make a single thread. The greater the thread ply, the thicker the thread and the thicker the fabric.
For a good softness level, you want to look for a sheet that has a high thread count but low thread ply. However, you may have to pay more for this type of sheet; so it’s best to consider all options before deciding on which cotton sheet to get.
