Being able to compare flat sheets is one of the skills that a buyer has to master. Since flat sheet manufacturers will all claim they are the best, you will need to do the comparisons yourself. Fortunately, this isn’t as hard as it seems.
Thread Count
The thread count is the main criteria used to determine the quality of the material. The higher thread counts signify a high quality flat sheet. Flat sheets with a thread count of 190 or less are called the average. But in fact they are too coarse.
There are also sheets with 200 to 280 thread counts. These are not bad, but the comfort level is much higher with 300 to 400 thread counts.
There may be some significant differences in the price between the 200 and 300 count sheets. However, the extra comfort you get from the higher thread count sheets will make up for it. If money isn’t an issue, there are 500 and 600+ count flat sheets available.
Materials and Colors
Another point you can use to compare flat sheets is the material used to make it. If you want the highest quality, get some flat sheets made from Egyptian cotton. Other high quality materials include satin and silk.
The more common types are bamboo fiber, rayon, cotton and polyester. Polyester is often combined with cotton or other materials. Other high quality variants are supima cotton, cotton flannel and cashmere wool with cotton.
Size
The flat sheet sizes are the following. For the twin it is 66 x 96 inches (167 x 243 cm); X-long twin, 66 x 102 inches (167 x 259 cm); full 81 x 96 inches (205 x 243 cm); queen 90 x 102 inches 228 x 259 cm) and king/California king 108 x 102 inches (274 x 259 cm).
Price and Buying Considerations
The cost of the items will largely depend on the factors just mentioned. However, the brand name may also affect the price. Designer brands will usually cost more than the upstart brands. Discounts and sales will also play a role in the pricing scheme. This simply means you have to be careful when it comes to deciding where to buy.
Although it seems like a lot of work, learning to compare flat sheets is not that difficult. When you surf on the Web, the required information will be clearly visible. This means you can make the comparisons easily.
