Shopping for sheets can be a tedious task if you don’t come armed with useful information that can help you pick the right sheets for your bed. You will need to know several things first prior to buying your sheets.
First of all, check the exact measurements of your bed. You don’t want to get something that will not fit your bed to a T. Secondly, find out standard sheet sizes based on your mattress size. Fitted sheets have a slightly different measurement when compared to flat sheets.
Fitted sheets shopping entails determining how deep the pockets should be so you can get sheets that will be a snug fit on your bed.
Tips on Fitted Sheets Shopping
As mentioned, you should consider the depth of the pockets when buying sheets. These will give you allowance as you tuck the sheets under your mattress. Usual pockets are about seven to nine inches deep or eighteen to twenty-three centimeters.
Deep pockets are about ten to fifteen inches or twenty-five to thirty-eight centimeters deep while the deeper pockets are approximately fifteen to twenty-two inches or thirty-eight to fifty-six centimeters deep.
The next thing to consider when shopping for your fitted sheets is the elastic. There are fitted sheets with elastics sewn-in only on the four corners of the sheets, while there are some that only have elastics on the sides.
For the best fit, you may want to get fitted sheets that have elastics that go all the way around the sheets. These may cost a bit more but the fit will be perfect and the sheet will stay in place no matter how much you move around on your bed.
General Tips on Shopping for Sheets
Once you have determined the type of elastics and depth of your fitted sheets, the next thing to consider is the sheet itself. Sheets come in different materials so you should check whether you want cotton, a cotton and polyester blend, satin or silk.
You should also check for washing instructions. There are sheets that are so fragile that hand-washing is the only option while there are those that you can easily throw in the washing machine and wash as you would any other regular item.
Finally, decide whether you want to buy a complete set, which would normally include one fitted sheets, one flat sheet, two pillowcases, and a sham; or if you would like to buy separates.
If you only want extra sheets, then going for separates is ideal. However, if you also need pillowcases and flat sheets; going with a complete set could be the better option.
