Flat sheets sometimes cause a bit of confusion for anyone who encounters them for the first time. This is especially true if you buy a new bed sheet set and find one along with the rest of the items in the package. The package will typically contain a fitted sheet, pillow cases, and that plain rectangular sheet you just can’t put a name on.
Differentiating Sheets
A bed sheet is something that you use to cover the mattress itself. Well, that’s the concept of what a bed sheet that many are familiar with but there’s another sheet you should know about. Most of us are familiar with the fitted sheets, also known as the bottom sheet, since these are the sheets that usually fitted on top of the mattress.
The plain rectangular sheet that comes with every bed sheet set is either called a top sheet or a flat sheet. This one goes on top of the bottom sheet and is tucked around at the bottom and sides of your mattress. This second sheet covering the fitted bottom sheet is quite common in many parts of the world.
The bottom sheet is constructed with fitted bottom simply to keep it in place even if you move around a lot in your sleep. You sleep on the bottom sheet and then cover yourself with the top sheet or flat sheet on top of view. Incidentally, this is where the expression “in between sheets”.
Flat Sheet Sizes
The top sheets come in various sizes that can fit the many sizes of mattresses everywhere. A California king size mattress is 72″ by 84″ while its matching top sheet’s dimensions are 108″ by 102″. This sheet can also be used for a regular king size mattress that are 76″ by 80″.
A queen size mattress is 60″ by 80″ and its matching sheet is 90″ by 102″ or 228 cm by 243 cm. Now, a full size mattress is 54″ by 75″ or the equivalent of 137 cm by 190 cm. Its matching top sheet is 81″ by 96″ or 205 cm by 243 cm.
An extra long twin mattress has dimensions of 39″ by 80″ and its matching sheet is 66″ by 102″. Next, a twin size mattress is 39″ by 75″ with a matching sheet that is 66″ by 96″. If you notice the dimensions of the sheets are usually larger compared to that of the mattresses. This is so because you will need a few inches of allowance so that you can tuck the sheets around the bed.
