A 220 to 280 thread count is considered adequate while 300 to 400 is preferred by many. There are also twin sheets with 500+ thread counts. These will cost more however.
You will see the importance of thread count because it is always specified in the product. But the thread used is also vital. A high quality thread and weave can produce soft sheets even if the thread count is low. The reverse can also happen. A poor thread will generate a coarse flat sheet, regardless of the thread count.
Materials Used on Sheets
The softest and strongest flat sheet material is Egyptian cotton. Other high quality materials are satin and silk. More commonly used are bamboo fiber and linen.
